The History Of Mayo Christian Church
The idea of Mayo Christian Church, came from a group of men attending the Union Church, which at that time, 1891, the Baptists, Methodists, and Christians alternated their services.
In 1903, a Christian member suggested that they build a church at Mayo. A church member donated the lot. Lumber for the framework and the fence was donated from a nearby farm. Church members cut and sawed the logs. The church was completed in 1905.
Mayo's first daily vacation Bible school was for two weeks and held in the morning in 1944. In the last several years Mayo has had only one week V.B.S. usually at night.
In 1960, the first addition of four classrooms were added to the back of the building and dedicated on November 6, 1960.
On September 8, 1963, new pews were dedicated. Through the years there have been many improvements such as: water, heating and air conditioning, new windows, aluminum siding, and carpet.
In 1970, a new entrance was added to the front of the building in the form of a vestibule.
In 1977, Mayo voted to add four more classrooms, two restrooms, and a fellowship hall and kitchen in the basement. A loan was acquired with God's help, and was retired 7 years ahead of schedule.
As 1985 began. The need for a Baptistry was the main topic. On March 24 a special offering for the 1985.
Baptistry was taken and soon funds were available. The Baptistry was dedicated on November 17, In 1988/89, 1989/90, 1990/91, the young people from Mayo entered the central Kentucky Bible Bowl. The first two years they were in both the junior & senior divisions, with the juniors winning the 4th place trophy! Mayo proudly supports our youth! Any child, who attends Mayo
The Church pays the tuition to Camp Calvary for one week. Mayo will continue to grow with our elderly guiding our youth!
